Guess what?  I have Strep Throat again!

Luckily, I have an appointment with an ENT to schedule a tonsillectomy.

Unfortunately, people of my generation rarely got their tonsils removed as kids.  Apparently some sadistic doctors got together in the late ’70’s and decided they would stop removing kids’ tonsils.  No, these doctors wanted us to wait until we became adults before we could get our tonsils out.  I assume they knew that a tonsillectomy is much more painful for adults than children.

Or maybe they thought removing tonsils every time a kid got a sore throat was unnecessary.

Choose your preferred reason.

I hope I “qualify” for the tonsil removal.  These surgeons should be vying for a reason to use their cool new shiny scalpels but they want us to suffer through at least 4 episodes of severe pharyngitis in a year.  I’ve had 3 episodes in about 4 months.  I hope I make the cut.

I’ll miss my tonsils mostly because I like the reaction I get from nurses and doctors when they look at my throat.  They say things like, “you poor baby” (I’m 22…but whatever), or “gross” or some other phrase that mixes disgust and pitty.  But hopefully doctors and nurses will still like me when I’m lacking in the tonsil area of my life.

Oh, I forgot the best part/only reason I decided to write about recurrent tonsilitis!  On Monday I saw a doctor in my doctor’s practice.  She ordered an intermuscular injection of Rocephin.  This was a good call on the Dr.’s part but I didn’t realize that this meant I hade to bare my backside.  I’ve never had a gulteal injection before but I assure you that it was both mildly painful and enormously embarassing.

The nurse chuckled at my awesome snowman underwear.  I know I turned bright red.  The nurse mumbled something like “At least you’re dressed for the season…this won’t hurt a bit”.  I think she was full of lies.  I wear those underewear in the summer too.  I like to think that the snowmen will keep me cool.  And that injection hurt like hell.

But whatever.  The Rocephin+Augmentin seems to be doing the trick.  And I’m getting over the guilt of giving strep throat to my favorite aunt.  In my defense, the Azithromycin (from the week before Thanksgiving) should have cleared up the infection.
