Biden Vs. Palin AND breaking linguistic barriers one failed joke at a time…

This post is for my dad, who refused watch the debate because he wanted to keep his sanity.  I promised a review of the debate.  I have failed you dad.  What follows is all I could muster for political analysis.

I tried very hard to watch the “debate” but it was just too weird.  Biden answered the questions while Pailn at one point said (I’m sumarizing)- “I’m not going to answer the questions, I’m going to speak directly to the American people.”

I tried being a good citizen, I tried to be open minded about Palin but every time she utters a word, she buries herself deeper into the soon-to-be melted Alaskan permafrost.  Or the frost formerly known as “permafrost”.  You know, like “the artist formerly known as prince”?

More interesting musing-

On a related pop-culture note- at work, the lab where I have my bench (experimental area for the humanities majors in the audience) is connected to another lab which is connected to a third lab where I have my desk/computer.  The two adjoining labs are run by a ridiculously cute German husband and wife duo.  Anyway, there is a life-sized cardboard cutout of Elvis (the “Early Elvis”-just a good looking guy in a dark suit) in the middle lab (this is Memphis afterall).  Rick, a Chinese researcher, had a Hawaiian lei hanging on his desk yesterday and as I was leaving, I decided that Elvis needed to wear that lei.  So today another co-worker, an American, noticed the lei and without missing a beat said, “Hmmm, Elvis got lei’d”.  Then he walked away leaving me laughing loudly in a room with 3 native Chinese speaker and one native German speaker, all of whom have had fewer than 5 years of English exposure.  I got some weird looks and apologized, saying, “It is really funny if English is your native language….I wish I could explain it in Chinese/German….sorry….”.

Yeah, that’s me- the cross cultural ambassador.
